| RFID at doorways |
| by Muhammad Adeel Zafar |
Hi,
I have few queries regarding selection of RFID hardware and I would really appreciate if someone could assist me. Actually, I want to use RFID to scan everybody that passes through a given doorway. What type of RFID reader should I be looking at.. I mean UHF, HF or LF?
One day ago, I had in mind to go for UHF fixed readers because of their long read range but when I started looking for the antennas, I got confused. I got the feeling that the same functionality can be achieved by LF readers with gate antennas installed.
If that is true, would someone please elaborate the difference in two configurations highlighting the pros and cons of each... a) I use UHF reader with 1 or 2 long range antennas to orient them in a way to cover the doorway b) I use LF reader with gate antennas to cover the doorway..
thanks in anticipation,
Adeel. |

Hi, Adeel,
If you can put RFID tags in the shoes, then we can give you RFID reader mounted on the floors near the entry / exit. So reader can detect the ID of the person/item crossing it.
If intrestting please give me more details

Hi, Adeel,
It is really depended on how you track people. If everyone has to waive the card to open the door to enter, HF, even LF, can do the work and you don't need the expensive UHF hardware. If you just scan everyone's id with a longer distance, at least 1 meter away, you basically can not use HF and LF. The only technology available is UHF and Active RFID. If you have a limit number of people to track, I would recommend you to consider using active RFID. There are a lot of success stories in using active RFID to track people and asset. Actually this is one of very few area RFID can have ROI in a short time. You can do it in a cheaper way using UHF. However, in the long run, your investment will be payoff by using active RFID because active RFID can allow far longer reading distance and you can track people not only at the doorway, but many place in the building. Your project maybe more easier to get approved if you can tell your boss your project can track people in real time rather than the position two hours ago at doorway. Just my 2 cents comment.
