[01/09/06]
SmartCode Corp., the world leading provider of low cost EPC RFID hardware solutions announced its congratulation to Pfizer, Inc. on the First mass deployment of EPC RFID on Viagra drugs distributed in the United States.
The announced project by Pfizer, Inc. will use low cost EPC RFID tags on each bottle of the Viagra Drug. Pharmacists and Customers can increase the level of anti-counterfeit measures by validating the unique EPC code directly from Pfizer website to make sure drugs are genuine and authenticated.
The manufacturing and importation of counterfeit drugs represents a particularly problematic issue in the United States - for patients, Government and the pharmaceutical industry. The World Health Organization has estimated that perhaps 7 or 8 percent of drugs worldwide are counterfeit, and reports from some countries suggest that as much as one-half of those countries' drugs are counterfeit. Moreover, a recent FDA investigation found that counterfeit drugs at U.S. postal facilities are virtually indistinguishable from the real medicines. Since 2001, counterfeit drug cases logged by the FDA have more than tripled.
"Preventing drug counterfeits is a critical mission in saving human lives." said Roy Apple, SmartCode Corp. VP, Business Development "SmartCode Corp., was an early pioneer in providing low cost EPC RFID tags as an anti-counterfeit measure to help the Public, Governments and the Pharmaceutical industry in reducing drug counterfeits. We would like to congratulate Pfizer, Inc. in taking a leadership role in protecting the US Public from drug counterfeits, and we encourage other drug companies to assist reducing this life threatening problem."
The Federal Drug Administration (FDA) published its "Combating Counterfeit Drugs" Report advocating the use of EPC RFID in the Pharmaceuticals industry the FDA states that Use of mass serialization to uniquely identify all drug products intended for use in the United States is the single most powerful tool available to secure the U. S. drug supply. Mass serialization involves assigning a unique number (the electronic product code or EPC) to each pallet, case, and package of drugs and then using that number to record information about all transactions involving the product, thus providing an electronic pedigree from the point of manufacture to the point of dispensing. This unique number would allow each drug purchaser to immediately determine a drug's authenticity, where it was intended for sale, and whether it was previously dispensed.
