It's worth using RFID in production since costs will sink and the quality will improve. This was the result reached by a study carried out by Siemens Business Services (SBS) at the Amberg Device Plant of Siemens Automation and Drives (A&D), where the investment in RFID paid off after two years. A&D assembles fully-automated electronic switching devices (contactors) at the plant and has been using RFID in the process for several years. SBS has now taken a closer look at the assembly line with A&D. The result: "The investment of around 150,000 euros in RFID technology had already paid for itself in its second year in operation," says Peter Segeroth from SBS Consulting. Klaus Bleisteiner, who is responsible for production line design at A&D, goes on to add: "RFID improves both product quality and plant utilization." Benefits of the radio frequency identification technology include faster data transfer, quicker mounting and a lower error rate.

The contactors are assembled fully automatically in hundreds of variants - well over 10,000 units per day. Each contactor is mounted on a plastic substrate to which a rewritable RFID chip is attached prior to assembly. The chip contains the information specifying which components are to be assembled on the contactor. 100 Siemens RFID read devices are installed in the production line, and before and after each individual production step the data on the plastic substrates is read and checked, to see whether the right components have been mounted.
