vps Video Print Systeme, a leading European supplier of professional IT solutions for identity management, announces that the German energy giant RWE Group has implemented icms (Identity and Card Management System) to manage the massive population of its employee credentials. The solution, provided by vps, went live in June and now covers over 45,000 workers in the Group's 25 or so companies spread out across eight European countries.

"Among the foremost challenges presented by this large-scale project was the need to handle the many different card technologies currently in use among the Group's companies: from magnetic stripe to various types of contactless employee badges," comments Karlheinz Bold, Sales Director at vps. "The obstacle was overcome using advanced features of icms such as configurable interfaces that enable the system to connect to the different data sources (i.e. corporate directories and employee databases) present within the Group's companies. Furthermore, the open architecture of vps' solution enables it to interface with a wide range of systems and serve as the information hub for all card-related applications."

Another complexity of the project, managed by RWE Systems, was the extremely broad spectrum of security needs of the single companies, from the basic necessities of RWE's real estate division, to the high security requirements of the Group's nuclear power plants.

Once again, icms was chosen because it is able to meet the requirements of even the most demanding enterprise security applications, with features such as dynamic forms, a look-up help function, and data input assistance and validation.

Furthermore, the large number of companies involved in RWE's credential management system called for a complex system administration architecture. Being completely web-based, vps' solution allows any number of authorized users to securely access the system via browser from anywhere in the world to create new employee cards and manage their lifecycles.

The customizability of icms also allowed vps to integrate an accounting system into the solution, requested by RWE in order to calculate and attribute costs (card personalization, badge holders, lanyards, card delivery, etc) to each Group company within a shared services concept.
