Blue Vector Systems announced that Nortel has selected its line of sensor networking appliances as part of its next generation of municipal wireless solutions. Nortel's municipal wireless solutions will deliver a range of services including automated meter reading, digital video surveillance, asset tracking, fleet monitoring, and video conferencing.

Blue Vector Systems' network appliances will be integrated with Nortel's solution to control a wide variety of sensors including RFID, global positioning, and video cameras. As an example, RFID and GPS sensors can be used by various city departments to discover the location of a fleet and its spare parts in real time. Rules can be easily configured to control data integration and worker notifications, and easily accessed via a secure web interface.

"Blue Vector shares our commitment to provide the most affordable and productive wireless solutions for widespread deployments," said Charles Salameh, leader, Network Business Solutions, Nortel. "Together, we will continue to discover new ways to make city workers and citizens more productive."

Nortel is currently showcasing the municipal wireless solution at a dedicated lab located in Research Triangle Park , N.C. The goal of the lab is to create an ecosystem of partners and technologies that combine to provide complete municipal solutions.

"We are thrilled that Nortel chose our network appliances as a part of their municipal wireless solution," said Nancy Anderson , CEO of Blue Vector Systems. "This is a really advanced and powerful combination of wireless mesh and wireless sensing that has the potential to change the economics of how a city communicates and manages its utilities, people, equipment, and assets."
