[03/20/07]
Patient Care Technology Systems (PCTS) announced that it was recognized with the prestigious Blue Diamond Award from Information Technology Charlotte, part of the Charlotte Chamber of Commerce, in the category of Best IT Innovation. PCTS was given this honor for its pioneering work in developing and implementing automatic patient and asset tracking software for healthcare providers throughout the United States .
"We are very pleased to receive this recognition of the innovation that our automatic tracking software represents," said Tony Marsico, CEO of PCTS. "We share this recognition with our customers who continue to demonstrate the efficiency and safety advantages of managing their emergency and surgical services departments with real-time patient and asset tracking. To receive this award from the Charlotte technology community is especially gratifying."
PCTS provides intelligent workflow automation solutions for high acuity and enterprise-wide needs. The company developed the first and most widely implemented software for tracking patients in emergency departments. The software utilizes real-time location data, communicated by infrared, RFID, ultra-wideband or Wi-Fi tags associated with patients, staff and mobile medical equipment, to identify location and movement. The tags communicate to ceiling-mounted sensors placed wherever location information needs to be identified. The company's software utilizes business process intelligence to identify patient care milestones based on the location data and the measurement of interactions between patients, caregivers and assets. The progression of each patient's care is automatically entered into the software without requiring busy caregivers to enter information manually which is unlike all other forms of patient tracking.
Real-time patient information is shared via thin client workstations throughout a department and is presented in a variety of user and department-level views including a customized map view of the department. Emergency department caregivers can manage their workflows more efficiently by having complete and timely status of the care progression of all their patients which can include the status of orders and the receipt of results based on interfaces with ancillary systems for the laboratory and radiology departments. Surgical department caregivers use the software as a centralized communication portal which can integrate information from surgery scheduling, nurse call and wireless telephony systems. Department management can retrospectively analyze patient flow and department resource utilization through the over 130 reports that are part of the tracking software.
Today, PCTS automatic tracking solutions, which are marketed under the Amelior brand name, support workflow needs in the emergency and surgical services departments, outpatient services as well as enterprise-wide asset tracking needs. PCTS solutions have automatically tracked over 2.5 million patient encounters to date. The company recently integrated the automatic tracking module within its electronic emergency department documentation solution, Amelior ED, to combine the efficiencies of automatic tracking with the clinical charting, decision support and disposition management functionalities of their ED information system.
