CISC Semiconductor - a design and consulting company for industries which develop microelectronic systems - is extending its simulation library platform to support product vendors and system integrators in design and evaluation of RFID products and systems based on the new EPCglobal HF AI protocol.

Technology demonstrations hosted by EPCglobalTM in spring 2006 compared the performance of passive high frequency (HF) and ultra high frequency (UHF) tags in order to show advantages of either HF or UHF for various application requirements.

The results showed value for UHF systems, however also pointed out, that HF systems are required for certain applications. Consequently, EPCglobalTM started a work group to develop a second generation HF AI standard based on the existing UHF Class 1 Gen 2 standard.

CISC Semiconductor supported processing this standard continuously with simulations to assure that the standard fulfills industry requirements. In fall 2007, CISC did site measurements followed by application simulations for a final review of functionality and performance of the protocol. This contributed to the establishment of the new HF AI protocol within EPCglobalTM and was an important step towards the design of a final standard.

Given the shortly planned EPCglobalTM ratification of the new 'EPCglobalTM Radio-Frequency Identity Protocols Class-1 Generation-2 HF RFID Protocol for Communications at 13.56 MHz', CISC's RFID ASD Kit+Library (http://www.cisc.at/asd) is the first simulation tool which already supports the new HF AI standard.

The CISC RFID ASD Kit+Library is a software simulation product to design and evaluate RFID systems and applications. Modeling, simulation, evaluation and optimization of applications based on various standards including the new HF AI protocol are possible. Due to CISC's active participation in international RFID standardization, the company is an innovator in this field and its products constantly ensure support of current standards.
