Awarepoint Corporation, a provider of active RFID real-time location system solutions to the healthcare market, announced it has been awarded U.S. Patent No. 7,336,182. Awarepoint's third wireless technology patent was issued for Tag Removal Detection and describes Awarepoint's unique optical method to detect if a tracking tag has been removed from an asset.

This latest patent provides meaningful differentiation to Awarepoint in providing a configurable security method to alert users when a tag has been removed from a device. The tag removal sensor is specifically designed in a manner that conserves power, preserving the long battery life of Awarepoint's active RFID tags.

Hampering theft of medical equipment in hospitals was the primary driver behind this tag advancement, although numerous other applications have surfaced, particularly in patient safety and further in the retail sector, once this patent issued

There are numerous applications, in healthcare and in other markets, when tag removal detection is of paramount importance. "Hampering theft of medical equipment in hospitals was the primary driver behind this tag advancement, although numerous other applications have surfaced, particularly in patient safety and further in the retail sector, once this patent issued," said Ron Hegli, chief technology officer of Awarepoint.

This patent follows Awarepoint's recent award of U.S. Patent No. 7,312,752 describing Awarepoint's techniques for accurate position location and tracking suitable for a wide range of facilities; and U.S. Patent No. 7,324,824 covering Awarepoint's mesh network plug-in sensor appliance and describing the use of a plug-in network appliance to perform a bridge between two wireless communication formats and perform position location services.
