Patient Care Technology Systems (PCTS), a subsidiary of Consulier Engineering, Inc., announced that, in response to the recent emergence of swine flu cases in North America, a swine flu clinical workflow algorithm has been added to the charting module of the company's Amelior ED emergency department documentation system. The new decision support content guides triage nurses through a decision tree of questions to ask patients and suggests steps to take based on patient responses. The company has offered the new clinical logic to all customers. The Amelior ED system is a comprehensive electronic medical record for emergency department patient care.

The Amelior ED system provides triage-to-disposition workflow visibility and automation support through its integration of computer-based modules for real-time location based patient and asset tracking, nurse and physician charting, computerized provider order entry, clinical decision support, prescription writing, disposition management and reporting. The system organizes all information for a patient's emergency department visit, including laboratory and radiology orders and results, within a single electronic medical record.

The clinical content that was specifically developed for swine flu is a set of questions triggered by chief complaints pertaining to acute febrile respiratory illnesses. When a triage nurse documents a complaint that might be associated with the flu, which is commonly fever, cough, body aches, headache, runny nose and sore throat, a decision tree of swine flu assessment questions automatically appears in the nurse's chart. The tool is configured with prompts that must be answered to ensure immediate response. The questions are based on the CDC criteria necessary to identify suspected swine flu cases. Recommendations for treatment are configurable by each department.

"The clinical intelligence within the Amelior ED system is highly configurable," said Jamie Karns RN, MSN, MPH, CNS, vice president of clinical services at PCTS. "Our customers can integrate the swine flu content at their discretion and adapt the treatment recommendations to comply with their clinical protocols."

The Amelior ED system is part of the Amelior Enterprise Visibility Suite of real-time location-based patient and asset tracking and clinical documentation solutions. The Amelior ED system is in use at emergency departments throughout the United States.
