The Lee County Library System of Southwest Florida has selected 3M Library Systems as its RFID provider, citing several advantages that helped 3M's solution stand out. Lee County staff reported that 3M's experience with providing RFID systems to hundreds of other libraries was a key differentiator, as was the company's local base of service people. Additionally, the exceptional quality of 3M's RFID tags, which maintain their performance over the life of an item, helped assure Lee County staff that time spent on system upkeep would be minimized.

"3M's track record with similar projects, overall technical quality, and robust support capabilities convinced us that we would be in good hands," said Mindi Simon, manager, Library Automation and Training. "They offered us the most compelling solution for our needs as well as the one that delivered the best value."

Lee County, with a collection of 1.4 million items and an annual circulation of almost 5 million, has seen dramatic increases in visits and circulation over the past several years, while its staffing budget has decreased during the same period. To continue serving its patrons quickly and efficiently, the library system is adopting a 3M RFID System, which includes RFID tags, self-checkout systems, automated materials handling systems, handheld digital library assistants, detection systems and conversion systems. With patrons utilizing the automated check-out and check-in stations, the library staff will be better able to assist visitors with their individual needs. Library staff believe that the increased efficiency offered by the automated systems will allow the technology to pay for itself over a period of years.
