The Ubisense Transit Yard Management system, used by Metro Transit in its garages in metropolitan Minneapolis-St Paul, has been chosen as one of the top 20 Tech innovations by Mass Transit magazine. The system was nominated for the Mass Transit magazine accolade by Metro Transit.
The real-time bus location system uses the Ubisense RTLS application to help achieve operational efficiency for dispatching Metro Transit's fleet of 900 buses. The system is installed across 5 garages, covering 915 000 sq ft. The Ubisense sensor network, with its sub-meter accuracy, provides location information, sufficiently accurate to locate buses in their correct lanes at all times, reducing operating costs by making dispatch and maintenance operations more efficient.
Each bus has a real-time location, ultra wideband radio system transmitter, known as an Ubisense Tag positioned on its rooftop. The Ubisense tag transmits a signal to a network of sensors located in the garage, which precisely calculate the bus location several times per minute.
In addition to precise location, the system is able to provide a wide range of information to garage dispatchers, including bus type, and maintenance status. This information is displayed in a web browser and enables the dispatchers to effectively schedule buses, ultimately determining bus departure and arrival times and minimizing time spent in maintenance.
