NXP Semiconductors today launched the latest of its RFID products - a low-cost UHF reader chip designed specifically for the appliance and consumable fast moving consumer goods market. A growing number of manufacturers integrate RFID solutions into products ranging from printers to beverage dispensing machines in order to enhance consumer experience as well as to combat counterfeit products. The RFID reader identifies RFID tag equipped consumables such as ink cartridges and drinks capsules, thereby ensuring optimal quality of print-outs and beverages. NXP now offers customers validated turn-key solutions incorporating a full range of UHF products from reader chips to transponder chips.

"In our busy lifestyles, we, as consumers, are increasingly buying FMCG goods in an effort to make our lives simpler and easier. As a result of this and increased uptake in new markets, ABI Research expects annual shipments of consumable goods to increase rapidly over the next four years. Manufacturers of both the consumables and the associated consumer electronics devices are increasingly looking for ways to offer greater functionality and a guaranteed minimum level of service to their customers whilst simultaneously protecting their brands and IP from the threat of counterfeiters. Employing RFID solutions is a cost effective way of achieving this", said John Devlin, group director, Security and ID, ABI Research.

"The launch of our new reader chip is a major milestone for NXP's RFID business, completing our UHF product portfolio and further strengthening our leadership position in the RFID industry," said Chris Feige, general manager, tags and labels, NXP Semiconductors. "Many manufacturers are deploying RFID for enhancing product quality through optimum appliance settings derived from product information on the consumable, and to ensure brand protection by using it to authenticate consumables and identify counterfeit goods. Our new reader chip offers poses a cost-effective solution that is specifically tailored to the needs of the appliance-consumable market."

NXP's new UHF reader chip is a complete system-on-chip solution which includes a UHF RFID transceiver and an integrated microcontroller. Along with its low power consumption and high level of integration allowing for a small footprint, the solution ensures low total cost of ownership on the appliance. This makes it ideal for the high volume appliance-consumable fast moving consumer goods market market. NXP has developed the SLRC900 in cooperation with PHYCHIPS.

Visit the NXP booth #604 at RFID Journal Live! on 3-5 April 2012, Orlando, to see NXP's RFID capabilities, including the new UHF reader IC. For additional information, please visit www.nxp-rfid.com.
